About This Project

Recreation Nova Scotia (RNS), in collaboration with the Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage – Communities, Sport, and Recreation Division, has produced an online and printed booklet on Outdoor Play for parents and caregivers. The booklet, Why Outdoor Play Matters: A practical guide for parents and caregivers includes things like: what to say instead of be careful, the adult role in outdoor play, 9 common play patterns, how to dress children for different seasons, the joy of mud kitchens, and much more!

The vision for this booklet is for Nova Scotian families to have a practical resource to use over time to support their understanding of the benefits of outdoor play for children. The goal is to increase parents and caregivers understanding and confidence in how to optimize the benefits of outdoor play for their children.

The booklet is available online, here. A French version is forthcoming.
