Risky Play and Outdoor and Unstructured Play Workshop
From May 30-31, 2016, KidActive led a 2-day Risky Play and Outdoor and Unstructured Play Workshop at the Thunder Bay and District Health Unit as part of the Healthy Kids Community Challenge; a program funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-term care aimed at improving children’s health by promoting healthy behaviours. The Risky Play and Outdoor and Unstructured Play Workshop started with a discussion on the evidence-based connections between healthy child development, outdoor play and risky play. Participants then looked at the theory and practice of outdoor play and risky play, built a common understanding of concepts, and worked to improve their collective understanding of local challenges and opportunities to increase the quality and quantity of outdoor play for children and youth in their communities.
Information delivered in this workshop was informed by the Position Statement on Active Outdoor Play.
