Nous avons conduit deux revues systématiques de la littérature scientifique pour évaluer les études les plus probantes sur l’effet net (c.-à-d., l’équilibre entre les bienfaits et les dangers) du jeu actif à l’extérieur et du jeu actif comportant un risque. D’autres articles et revues de la littérature ont aussi été consultés. Cet énoncé de position s’applique aux filles et aux garçons (de 3 à 12 ans) peu importe leur ethnie, leur race ou le statut socioéconomique de leur famille. Les enfants ayant un handicap ou une condition médicale peuvent aussi participer au jeu actif à l’extérieur en suivant les conseils d’un professionnel de la santé.
La tendance actuelle d’interdire des activités à l’extérieur qui comportent un potentiel de blessures, comme jouer au ballon dans les cours d’école, ainsi que le débat qui entoure la sécurité de la glissade en traîneau, amène à se questionner sur l’équilibre nécessaire entre maintenir nos enfants actifs et en santé, et les protéger de blessures sérieuses. Si nous couvons constamment nos enfants et élaborons trop de règlements sur ce qu’ils peuvent et ne peuvent pas faire, brimons-nous leur capacité naturelle à apprendre et à se développer? Si nous modifions les aires de jeux dans l’objectif de prévenir toutes les blessures et toutes les poursuites judiciaires, en évacuons-nous tout le plaisir? Est-ce vraiment plus sécuritaire pour nos enfants de passer des heures assis sur un fauteuil plutôt que de jouer activement dehors? Nous devons reconnaître la différence entre les concepts de danger et de risque. Nous devons également valoriser la santé à long terme et le plaisir autant que nous valorisons la sécurité.
Le mot « risque » a mauvaise presse auprès des parents, du voisinage, des professionnels de la santé, des détenteurs de polices d’assurance, des écoles et des municipalités. Toutefois, pratiquer un « jeu actif comportant un risque » ne signifie pas de s’exposer au danger, comme patiner sur un lac semi-gelé ou permettre à un enfant d’âge préscolaire de se rendre seul au parc. Le jeu actif comportant un risque correspond plutôt au jeu que les enfants considèrent excitant, où les blessures peuvent arriver, mais où les enfants peuvent reconnaître et évaluer les défis en fonction de leurs propres habiletés1,2. Permettre ce type de jeu signifie de donner aux enfants la liberté d’apprendre à grimper, d’explorer la forêt, de se salir, de jouer à la cachette, de se promener dans le quartier, de se tenir en équilibre, de faire des culbutes et de se chamailler, surtout dehors, afin d’être physiquement actifs, de développer diverses habiletés, de même que leur confiance en eux, leur autonomie, leur résilience, leur capacité à résoudre des problèmes, ainsi que de connaître leurs propres limites. Il s’agit de laisser les enfants être des enfants, mais plus en santé et plus actifs.
